The transition to a decarbonised economy is an important accelerator of growth and technological advancement in the energy industry, as well as generating a positive environmental, social and economic impact. At the social level, new employment and requalification opportunities for both individuals and communities will be seen in industry, compensating for the reduction of jobs in certain segments.

We fully support the principles of a just transition (just socio-ecological transition) so that no one is left behind, even in the short term, and we are aware of the social impact of our climate strategy, which represents a broader commitment in line with the Group's approach to respecting human rights along the value chain,  as also set out in our Human Rights Policy.

In 2019, the Enel Group, of which Enel Chile is a member, signed the United Nations letter of commitment to a just transition and the creation of decent and "green" jobs by:

  • promoting social dialogue with workers and their trade unions, respecting workers' rights, promoting social protection and providing wage guarantees, in accordance with International Labour Organization (ILO) standards;
  • work with suppliers who respect these standards, while contributing to the social and economic development of local communities most exposed to the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energies.

Our Action Plan for a Just Socio-Green Transition

At the heart of our strategy is the goal of helping to build a fairer and more inclusive society along the entire value chain, while protecting the environment in which we live and creating future opportunities for the company and our stakeholders, leaving no one behind.

We are committed to managing this transition through a strong and ongoing dialogue with trade unions to put into practice the principles of just transition as they affect everyone directly involved in the process, in particular through the conversion of plants to coal and related sites.

Enel Chile is committed to a just energy transition, reconverting the skills of its employees and communities.

At Enel Chile we remain committed to contributing to a just transition, leaving no one behind, promoting the creation of sustainable and decent jobs, for which collaboration between the Government, the private sector, civil society and other interested parties is essential.

The Bocamina power plant contributed for decades to the country's energy security, marking a milestone in September 2022 by closing its operating cycle and putting an end to our coal-fired technologies:

  • Bocamina I 50 years and Bocamina II 20 years of operation respectively.
  • 1,264 MWh of energy generated in 2022 by Bocamina II to address the energy crisis in Chile, at the request of the Ministry.
  • 71% upskilling & reskilling within the Company.
  • 29% of retirement and/or entrepreneurship plans outside the Company.
  • Local and national supply chain, including 20 SMEs from the Coronel commune.
  • Community relationship model with a Human Rights approach, recognized by the Global Compact, a UN initiative to promote sustainability in the private sector, which highlights the implementation of actions with different local groups, with an investment of US$ 120 million destined to rebuild and remedy the social fabric, uncouple economic dependency through long-term development programs supported with different competitive funds, and promote the recovery of social, physical, economic, natural, and cultural capital, as appropriate.

The retraining of those who are directly affected by the energy transition is essential to support local economies and market competitiveness and be prepared to create new employment and reskilling opportunities.

We are committed to providing training programs for workers involved in the decarbonization process of the energy matrix.

  • upskilling/reskilling and redeployment of those working in coal-fired power plants;
  • voluntary early retirement plans;
  • training to acquire new skills and to support generational mixing and knowledge sharing.
~64%
of people leaving coal power plants have been redeployed +30 hours of training per capita in upskilling and reskilling programs
~95%
Coal people redistributed within the perimeter of GPG
~5%
Coal people redistributed to other business areas of Enel Chile
Enel Chile has support mechanisms for certain segments of the population to help pay the cost of electricity, in order to allow equitable access to energy, as well as a wide range of energy-efficient products that help consume less energy and produce fewer emissions.

The Supplier Development Program is an Enel initiative whose objective is to promote the sustainable development of its suppliers, so that its production chain is more solid, efficient and innovative, and to guarantee compliance with the strategic objectives of the Enel Group. Suppliers play a crucial role in achieving the energy transition objectives that the Group has set for itself.

With this program we seek to meet the needs of the Business Lines for their main purchasing categories for the next 3 years, ensuring the availability of high-performance suppliers.

Development Focus towards suppliers:

  • Alignment with the Strategic Pillars of the Enel Group in Sustainability and Circular Economy.
  • Increase in the scope of action of suppliers to other Lines of Business.
  • Dimensional Growth, Development of operational and productive Capacities.
